But with their newest release, the Tar Belly Slayer, Slayer Calls is making it possible for hunters of all abilities to call in geese with a revolutionary new design that takes ease of use to the next level.
Speck calls are popular among goose hunters. An experienced hunter can produce a sequence of sounds, including yodels, clucks and murmurs, which gives the call significant versatility in the field.
But speck calls also have a somewhat higher barrier to entry than other goose calls. For one thing, they typically require a lot of air pressure, which is used to turn over the reed and produce realistic sounds. They also require two hands and a skilled hold, which makes them less accessible to one-handed hunters and hunters with limited hand dexterity.
Bill Ayer, CEO of Slayer Calls explained, “The hand holding the call creates back pressure when it’s closed around the exhaust, to just the right point. The other hand is used to direct the sound and throw it forward, making it louder like a megaphone.”
In 2021, however, Bill and his team — most commonly associated with handcrafted duck calls — decided to take the beloved speck call back to the drawing board. Their revolutionary new design makes it possible to create the same realistic yodels, clucks and murmurs as any old-fashioned speck call, but with minimal air pressure and less complicated hand maneuvers.
“The user no longer has to use their hands to find that exact position to create their own back pressure,” said Ayer. “With our design, we have built in the back pressure by constricting the exhaust so it’s not so hard to find with the hand holding the call.”
