Uganda has relaxed its gorilla trekking policies and guidelines for the first time.

Kampala, Uganda, 26 May 2020 – As a result of the global health crisis, Uganda has decided to relax its strict laws on gorilla trekking.
Uganda Tourist, a travel guide company, shares that Uganda has relaxed most of its rules on gorilla permit booking. Although gorilla trekking is popular at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, new laws protect them.
Uganda Tourist Guide reports that “almost half of the mountain gorillas are found in Uganda…This makes Uganda the best destination to go mountain gorilla tracking. The country has plenty to offer and considering the fertile soils of Bwindi National Park, there is plenty of food for them which makes them really gigantic, healthy, and worth seeing compared to the rest.”
Starting in April of this year, the Uganda Wildlife Authority placed a hold on gorilla trekking as a result of global health concerns. These rules were put into place to protect the endangered species from getting sick. In fact, there are only less than 1,000 gorillas left on the planet.
Incredibly enough, there are three places in the world where gorillas are found. This includes destinations like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. Fortunately, Mgahinga National Park in Uganda is also one of the rare places where you can spot a gorilla in its natural habitat.
However, the government in Uganda has placed the entire country on lockdown as a consequence of the global health crisis. That means that all tourists are restricted from their planned gorilla trekking adventures in Uganda. On the bright side, these measures may be updated as soon as Uganda reopens its borders.
As Uganda Tourist shares, “mountain gorillas share 98.3% of their genetic code with human[s] and that makes then man’s closest relatives in regards to wildlife. In Uganda, they are only found in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Their social life is quite breathtaking and fascinating since they are wild animals, they leave in groups with a silverback dominating the entire group and all females belong to him.”
