What is Ketosis?
Yes, you have heard of the Keto diet but what exactly is ketosis and how can it be beneficial to you? The term nutritional ketosis is when your body enters a metabolic state in which it burns fat for fuel instead of glucose.
The keto diet involves eating foods that are low in carbohydrates and high in fat, which induces a state of ketosis in the body. Ketosis occurs when the body runs out of its default fuel source, glucose. Glucose most often comes from carbohydrates, a result of the body breaking down carbs into sugar. When your body isn’t getting enough fuel from carbs, it will look for energy from its second favorite fuel source, fats.

This involves the breakdown of fat (fatty acids) which creates what are called ketone bodies. These ketones replace glucose as the main source of energy. How do you know when you are in ketosis?
Before you enter a state of ketosis, you most likely experience a phase of adaption which can include several symptoms. This is mainly due to the carbohydrate withdrawal which may include what is known as “the keto flu”, headaches, nausea, fatigue, irritability, and light-headedness. These symptoms may persist for a few days or weeks.
