It All Starts With the Heart
We all know that it’s the heart that pumps blood around the body. Averaging between 60-100 beats per minute, it keeps oxygenated blood from the lungs circulating around the body.
Blood circulation continues until the blood comes back to the heart full of carbon dioxide. This blood is then returned to the lungs, picks up oxygen, and comes back to the heart to start the process all over again.
The Role of Veins and Arteries
Veins and arteries are crucial parts of the cardiovascular system. Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart and send it to all parts of the body.
Veins, with their system of valves, work against gravity. They send deoxygenated blood back to the heart. In a physically active adult or child, the muscles in the legs also help this process work successfully.
The Two Parts of the Circulatory System
There are two circulatory systems in the body – pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation.
Pulmonary circulation takes the blood on a short journey from the heart to the lungs and back again.
Systemic circulation is the system that carries the blood around the rest of the body. First, the aorta, a large artery, sends blood away from the heart. It branches off into smaller and smaller arteries until tiny capillaries deliver oxygen to the cells.
The capillaries then return waste products to small veins. They in turn lead to bigger and bigger veins. The blood then returns to the heart, to be pumped back to the lungs, to start the process all over again.

The brain tells the body how hard it needs to pump, depending on what you are doing. The electrical signals control each part of the heartbeat, keeping it pumping smoothly.
Maintaining a Healthy Circulatory System
