Freed Marcroft, a divorce and family law firm, selects Elena Roberts as winner of their “Play All In” scholarship.
Hartford, Connecticut, May 29, 2024 — In May, Freed Marcroft – a divorce and family law firm out of Hartford, CT – selected college student Elena Roberts as the winner of their 2023 “Play All In” scholarship. The inspiration behind their scholarship was to learn from the younger members of their community about how one can choose to take responsibility for their reactions to the challenges life throws at us.
To be eligible, applicants must have been a high school senior, vocational student, college student, or graduate student, and a legal resident of the U.S., as well as have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Judges narrowed applicants down by GPA and to their response to the essay prompt, which asked them to submit a 750-1000 word essay describing a time in their life when things were moving in a direction they didn’t want and decided to make a change.
Meghan Freed, co-founding attorney and managing co-partner of the firm, stated, “We received entries from so many amazing applicants, it was definitely one of the harder choices we have had to make. We really wanted to find that one person who grabbed life by the horns and didn’t let go, someone who refused to succumb to the challenges and hardships they were faced with, and instead created their own path.”
Elena Roberts was chosen as the winner of the $2,500 scholarship. She is a student currently enrolled at the University of Connecticut, pursuing a degree in Psychological Sciences, and boasts a 3.6 GPA. Her essay, which described the hardships she faced after losing both of her parents before the age of 10, was not only exceptionally written, but inspiring.
Roberts explains how her parents were the driving force behind her educational goals, but after their unfortunate passing, she was forced to look deep into herself for that motivation. “I am a firm believer in being able to decide how I want to live my life and I have chosen not to let life’s adversities take over,” she stated in her essay. “I believe the opportunity to take things into your own hands is always there…”
The firm’s other co-founding attorney and managing co-partner, Kristen Marcroft said of Roberts, “She refused to let anything limit or define her. Instead, she conquered her goals with tenacity, ownership, and commitment, the very values we live by in the firm. It is an honor to award her with this scholarship…”
When notified of the award, Ms. Roberts shared her thoughts on the win: “Thank you to the Freed Marcroft scholarship committee for this generous award. Your support allows me to continue my academic journey and motivates me to strive for excellence. I am very honored to have been chosen as the recipient of this award and am committed to making the most of this opportunity.”
The firm feels privileged to be able to serve their community by offering the scholarship and helping deserving students get the encouragement they need to pursue their educational dreams. “Being able to participate in the Freed Marcroft scholarship process, and award someone with what could be a life-changing opportunity was humbling. The way these students overcame their hurdles in order to blaze a new trail for themselves was inspiring, and I have no doubt that every one of them deserves an award…” further stated Marcroft.
