Highland Village, TX, December 2, 2020 – Just last month Mr. Torben Nielsen, a Danish immigrant became a United States citizen after having been in the USA for 34 years. As Torben says “I got here as soon as I could!” Upon arriving in the US, Torben embraced the “can do” spirit of America by starting his own successful business and his own Danish-American family. Torben is definitely living the American Dream now.
Torben came to Texas in August of 1986 and started working for a Scandinavian furniture retailer on a student exchange program provided by the ASF (American Scandinavian foundation). After having managed the Arlington, TX branch he wanted to become his own boss and founded Nielsen Trading, Inc. and began to import products made in Denmark.
Early on he discovered a small family business in Denmark whose expertise was hand-making mobiles or “hanging art pieces”. As unique as the hanging mobiles are, he felt that America would be a great market for these contemporary home decor designs. All Flensted Mobiles are individually assembled by hand by skilled homeworkers in the area around Brenderup, not far from Odense where Hans Christian Andersen was born several centuries ago. The mobile company was started in 1954 by Christian and Grethe Flensted and is today run by their son Ole and his wife Aase.
In 1982 Grethe and Christian Flensted decided to pass the baton on to Ole and Aase. They have continued to operate the mobile company since. They have always paid great respect to its original ideals and creative inspirations from around the world.
Flensted Mobiles are sold world-wide today including the United States. They can be found in exclusive museum gift shops, higher-end furniture, and gift stores as well as children’s stores. Torben Nielsen is the owner and president of Nielsen Trading, Inc. the exclusive importer of the mobiles located in Dallas, Texas where he lives with his 3 girls(wife and 2 daughters).
