Thinking About Buying a Home in Somerville, Massachusetts?

At four square miles, Somerville is the 15th densest city in the United States, with over 75,000 residents packing the city.  Fiercely independent, Somerville has an identity all its own, not merely the alterna-cousin to Boston and Cambridge. Historically, Somerville was a manufacturing stronghold of the Northeast, with brickmaking and automotive assembly among the top industries of the past. This spirit of ingenuity remains today in the diverse residents who now call Somerville home.

Home of Tufts University and the massively sprawling Assembly Row shopping and entertainment complex, Somerville has something for everyone, whether you’re a long-time resident, or someone looking to build a home in a vibrant community just minutes from downtown Boston. Somerville residents are an eclectic mix of young professionals, lifelong residents, blue-collar families, college students, and recent immigrants from Central and South America. Somerville is known to be a melting pot of the greater Boston area.

You won’t run out of things to do in Somerville. Colored with creativity and filled with craft breweries, local restaurants with a diversity of menus, plenty of live music and arts, and even a chocolate factory, Somerville is undergoing a multi-decade renaissance and features some of the area’s most desirable zip codes for young professionals. Fun fact: per capita, Somerville has more artists than any other American city, including such artist enclaves as New York City and Santa Fe, and is supported by the well-organized Somerville Arts Council.

Along with Cambridge, Somerville is unquestionably a bicycle-friendly city, featuring miles of community bike paths on and off-street, and a few excellent bike shops like ACE Wheelworks and Somervelo.

Somerville consists of a number of smaller neighborhoods, including:

  • Davis Square is a vibrant nightlife, dining, and commercial district bustling with activity. Here, you will find the Somerville TheatreRosebud, live music, and arts festivals.
  • Teele Square is a short walk from Tufts University and is centrally located near Cambridge, Arlington, and Medford. Teele Square is a quiet and safe neighborhood with plenty of dining options nearby.
  • Powder House Square‘s history dates back before the American Revolution and features the oldest stone building in Massachusetts (which you can see in Powderhouse Park, where you can now take parkour classes!).
  • Next to Powder House Square are Ball Square and Magoun Square both sits just south of Tufts University and will be new stops along the MBTA Green Line D-Line extension project bringing subway service beyond Lechmere.
  • Winter Hill is named after the 120-foot hill that occupies the neighborhood’s landscape and appears as one of the more residential areas within Somerville where homes far outnumber businesses and nightlife hotspots. And yes, the Winter Hill Gang – dubbed by the Boston Herald and made famous by Whitey Bulger and associates – gets its name from this neighborhood in Somerville.
  • East Somerville is just east of I-93 opposite Assembly Square and is convenient to the MBTA Orange Line stops at Sullivan Square and Assembly Row. Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride in 1775 came right through East Somerville and is celebrated every Patriots’ Day.
  • Assembly Square has been entirely transformed by the gleaming and enormous Assembly Row complex, featuring retail, apartments, shopping (trendy and otherwise), restaurants, and convenient access to Boston via the new MBTA Orange line station.
  • Union Square is undergoing a massive redevelopment around the extension of the MBTA Green Line and introduction of new tech companies and lab spaces on par with Kendall Square in Cambridge. Here you will find tons of excellent restaurants and outdoor spaces and the imposing Prospect Hill Tower with stunning views of the area and Downtown Boston.
  • Spring Hill sits on the southwestern edge of Somerville, a quick walk from the Porter Square MBTA stop in Cambridge.
  • Alewife Brook Parkway stretches through West Somerville, just west of Tufts University and featuring quiet multi-family buildings on tree-lined streets.
  • The Ward Two / Brickbottom / Inner Belt District remains one of the larger and more discussed areas for redevelopment in Somerville, with many sets of plans and designs in place to transform this area from mostly industrial to an urban village concept.
  • Ten Hills is a wedge-shaped neighborhood on the Mystic River bounded by I-93 and the Fellsway, and abutting Assembly Row. While the area only has one-tenth of the hills claimed by its name, the neighborhood remains tucked away from some of the more well-known commercial districts in Somerville.
