Digital design is removing the stopping points that once helped people decide when to stop scrolling, watching, buying and checking

The digital world was originally built around helping people find information, complete tasks and move on. Increasingly, however, apps and platforms are being designed around a different objective: keeping users engaged for as long as possible.

According to writer and digital commentator Maddison Dwyer, that shift is changing more than screen time. It is quietly reshaping everyday habits, from how people consume information and shop online to how they respond to boredom, make decisions and manage their attention.

In her latest analysis, “Yes. Apps Are Quietly Replacing Your Habits. And You Haven’t Noticed,” Dwyer argues that the most important change in digital design may not be the amount of content people consume, but the disappearance of the natural stopping points that once told them when an activity was finished.

“Early digital design was mostly navigational. You went somewhere to find something, you found it, and you left,” Dwyer writes. “What’s happened since, gradually and then comprehensively, is that design stopped being primarily about navigation and started being about behaviour.”

From navigation to behavioural design

Infinite scrolling, autoplay, personalised recommendations, notification badges and one-click purchasing all remove small moments of friction from the user experience.

On the surface, that makes products easier and more convenient to use. But Dwyer argues that friction has another function: it creates a moment in which people can pause and make a conscious decision.

“When you remove every point of resistance, you don’t just make a product easier to use,” she explains. “You make it harder to stop using.”

That distinction is becoming increasingly important as digital products compete for attention.

The attention economy rewards metrics such as session length, daily active users and engagement. From that perspective, an interface that helps a user complete a task quickly and leave can be less valuable than one that continually presents another video, another recommendation, another notification or another purchase opportunity.

The missing ending

Dwyer describes these natural stopping points as “stopping cues”: signals that tell us an activity has reached a natural conclusion.

A printed chapter ends. A shop closes. An album reaches its final track. A television programme finishes.

Digital environments can remove those boundaries almost completely.

A social feed does not have a final post. Streaming services can immediately start another episode. Short-form video platforms can deliver another piece of content before the user has had a chance to decide whether they want to continue.

The result is an environment where the next action is frequently presented before the user has consciously chosen it.

Research cited by Dwyer illustrates why this matters. Gloria Mark, an informatics professor at the University of California, Irvine, has tracked changes in digital attention over two decades, with research indicating that the average period people spend focused on a single screen has fallen dramatically.

The issue, Dwyer argues, is therefore not simply how much time people spend online.

It is what repeated exposure to these environments may be teaching them to expect.

Constant novelty. Immediate stimulation. Fewer pauses. Faster decisions. And an increasing discomfort with moments in which nothing is happening.

When convenience becomes conditioning

The same principles extend beyond social media.

Ecommerce platforms reduce the distance between wanting something and buying it. Streaming services reduce the distance between one episode and the next. Delivery apps remember payment information and previous orders. Recommendation systems increasingly decide what users see before they actively search for it.

Each individual design decision can appear harmless.

Collectively, Dwyer argues, they represent a significant change in the relationship between users and technology.

“The most persuasive part of the interface may not be what it shows us, but what it withholds: the ending,” she writes.

That idea also changes how the conversation around digital wellbeing should be approached.

Rather than asking only whether someone spends “too much” time on their phone, Dwyer suggests asking a different question:

What is the interface encouraging me to do?

The power of the default

One of the most significant mechanisms in this environment is something users often barely notice: the default.

Autoplay can be switched off. Notifications can be disabled. Screen-time limits can be activated. Recommendations can sometimes be changed.

But these options generally require the user to take action first.

The default, meanwhile, is already making a decision on their behalf.

Dwyer points to behavioural research demonstrating how dramatically defaults can influence human behaviour, arguing that the principle translates directly into digital environments.

“If you understand how an interface structures choices, removes stopping cues and decides what appears next,” she writes, “you’re in a much better position to ask whether your behaviour reflects your intentions or simply follows the path made easiest.”

This isn’t an argument to abandon technology

Dwyer is careful not to frame the issue as a simple battle between people and technology.

The argument is not that apps are inherently harmful, nor that people should simply put their phones down.

Instead, she believes digital literacy needs to evolve.

People have become highly capable at learning how to use technology, but considerably less accustomed to examining how technology uses design, defaults and algorithms to influence what they notice, choose and do.

That distinction could become increasingly important as digital products become more deeply embedded in everyday life.

“The goal isn’t fear, guilt or the rejection of technology,” Dwyer writes. “It’s awareness.”

The question may no longer be whether technology is influencing behaviour. It is whether users understand how it is doing so.

And perhaps the next stage of digital literacy is not learning how to spend less time online, but learning to recognise when an interface is making the next choice for us.
