Vision changes could be a sign of cancer elsewhere in the body says Essex surgeon
An Essex surgeon is warning that changes in eyesight could in rare instances be a sign of cancer
An Essex surgeon says that vision changes could, in rare instances, be a sign of cancer elsewhere in the body.
Blurry vision, flashes, or unexplained redness could be signs, and we are being urged not to ignore them.
Lead Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon Mfazo Hove, from Blue Fin Vision in Chelmsford, says that changes in vision can sometimes signal underlying cancers.
“The eyes are an important organ in the sense it’s one of the very few organs where looking into the eye can give you an indication that there’s problems elsewhere in the body.
“Eyes are different in the sense that there isn’t a symptom in the eye that would make you worry that something is cancer.
“If you lost weight uncontrollably, or notice blood in your poo, you’d probably think to yourself ‘Geez’, there’s something seriously wrong with me right? Whereas with the symptoms in the eye, they aren’t specific to cancer.
“What you might get is you notice that your vision’s blurred, or that part of your vision is missing. You mightn’t think that was something serious to start with, but it may actually be indicative, for example, of lung cancer having spread into your eye, or cancer from your bowel having split into your eye.
“If I look inside your eye and I see a big lump, that’s not good right? And so that might be that I am actually looking at the actual cancer.
“But somebody can’t look at a list of symptoms and then say, could I possibly have cancer.
“The symptoms aren’t a dead giveaway that this is cancer, it is just more a doctor then has to sift through the symptoms and try to explain why you have the problems.
“Eye cancers are incredibly rare.
“The importance that you have is that what we are trying to say to patients is if you have a problem with your eyes, it’s something that we don’t want you to ignore. And the easiest person to go and see is to go and see your optometrist.”
