Ted’s Restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama is celebrating 50 years of serving their customers top notch food.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Birmingham, AL, June 3, 2023— One of Alabama’s finest restaurants is celebrating 50 years of business!
Ted Sarris (Mister Ted) was born in Tsitalia, Greece in 1930, and moved to Birmingham in 1955. He began work at his uncle Jim Sarris’s restaurant. In 1960 he became sole owner of the Old Hickory Restaurant.
Thirteen years later, he renamed it Ted’s, and moved it to the current location. Ted’s Old Hickory Restaurant held its grand opening on June 11, 1973. For the next 27 years, Mister Ted served his loyal customers a daily dash of Greek flavor—with a healthy side of Birmingham- style Greek hospitality.
Eventually, Ted decided it was time for the next chapter in his life, and that it was time to hang up the apron. As fate would have it, Ted crossed path’s with Tasos and Beba Touloupis in 2000 while planning his 70th birthday party at the Hoover Country Club—where Tasos was working as the manager.
After the group got to talking, the Touloupis’ would end up buying the restaurant and becoming the next generation of owners.
“He made the deal happen for me. To this day, I’m very much in debt for his gratitude because he put a deal together that I could not refuse at the time,” said Tasos.
The Touloupis family decided to keep the name, since Ted’s was already so well known. Now, two decades later, Ted’s is still serving food on a menu very similar to the one Ted crafted many years before.
Ted’s menu offers a wide variety of both lunch and brunch food that cater to all tastebuds. Whether you are a vegetarian, or an avid meat eater, you are guaranteed to eat good at Ted’s! Ted’s also offers catering for parties and events!
To celebrate the anniversary, Ted’s is rolling out some new merch! Customers can now buy Ted’s mugs, t-shirts & sweatshirts designed by Yellow Hammer Creative. In addition, Local artist Eric Poland designed a poster of the Ted’s iconic sign that has been welcoming people to Ted’s for 50 yrs.
So what exactly is the secret behind 50 years of success for Ted’s?
“It’s our dedication to our customers and the Birmingham community. They are like family to us, and we are constantly looking for ways to better serve them, whether it be cooking up someone’s Saturday morning regular, or supporting local charities,” said Beba Touloupis.
The team at Ted’s pride themselves on their dedication to the community. During the week, all dessert sales go towards the benefit of three different organizations: ATeam Ministries, an organization that provides support to families fighting cancer, Blanket Fort Hope, which aims to support child trafficking survivors, and ELI Thrive, an organization dedicated to helping East Lake residents thrive.
At Ted’s, each and every customer is treated like a VIP, and everyone is in for a great experience. So what are you waiting for? Come on down and help celebrate Ted’s Restaurant 50th anniversary!
