FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 8, 2021– Many of us spend those pockets of time when we have nothing to do aimlessly scrolling through Instagram, glancing at our friends’ posts, and staring at the images of the influencers we follow. Why are their posts so much more addictive? Because they’ve got everything we want! Okay, so maybe they don’t have everything, but we follow them because they have aspirational qualities we aspire to, whether that’s the body, the money, or (be honest) the stuff.
Influencers aren’t just people anymore; they’re brands and businesses who have been able to turn their crafted images into six or seven-figures a year in income. Many of these influencers have less than 500,000 followers. So, what exactly is an influencer, what do they do, and what do they get paid? Keep reading to find out!
What is an Instagram Influencer and What’s Involved?
An Instagram influencer is someone who has a popular Instagram account with a large following (typically 50,000 – 1m+) who is influential to the people in their niche. Their followers look up to them and aspire to be like them, which makes them the perfect person to promote and advertise products and services for other businesses to potential customers (their followers).
For example, Nike may pay Cristiano Renaldo (a world-famous soccer player) to take a picture of him wearing their gear. His followers will then know that he likes Nike and are more likely to purchase their products.
The influencer will need to meet certain requirements set out in a contract, such as how many photos the influencer is required to put up, where they need to be, and in what light their product must be shown (positive), in order to get paid. Sounds fairly simple, right? So, how much do they get paid?
What Do Instagram Influencers Get Paid?
Kylie Jenner (@kyliejenner)
Kylie, a member of the Kardashian family, recently became the youngest “self-made” billionaire in history. Her following has largely been built on Instagram, which she then used to launch her successful beauty brand. She has 150 million followers and makes around $500,000 per sponsored Instagram post.
Victoria (@inthefrow)
Victoria is a well-known fashion and beauty influencer based in London, with over 889,000 followers. She has a YouTube channel in which she shares her life, constantly attending meetings and events with brands. She makes approximately $4,000 per post.
Robin Gallantt (@robingallantt)
Robin is a fitness influencer with over 907,000 followers, is the girlfriend of Gymshark founder Ben Francis, and frequently promotes other brands and products she enjoys. Robin makes approximately $4,500 per post.
Cristiano Renaldo (@cristiano)
Cristiano, the famous soccer player, has 189 million followers, and regularly promotes other brands. A single post can make him around $600,000.
George Farmer (@georgefarmerstudios)
George is an aquascaper – a luxury niche where art, gardening, and fishkeeping meet. George has over 58,000 followers, travels all over the world sharing his love of aquascaping, and regularly promotes the brands he works with. He makes around $300 per post.
Tamara Kalinic (@tamara)
Tamara is a luxury fashion influencer, regularly traveling around the world to work with brands like Hermes, Gucci, and Fendi. She has almost 800,000 followers, and makes around $3,500 per post, though this is likely a conservative estimate as all her sponsored posts are for luxury brands whose products start at around that figure.
Molly Burke (@mollyburkeofficial)
Molly is a lifestyle blogger and motivational speaker who is completely blind. Molly has over 830,000 followers and makes around $3,000 per post.
Kim Dao (@kimdaoblog)
Kim is a travel, beauty, and fashion influencer who regularly travels to Japan. Kim has 145,000 followers and makes approximately $700 per post, though often travels to Japan to take client photos, so this estimate is likely low.
How to Become an Instagram Influencer
Treat It As a Business – when you’re an influencer you are a brand and you are in marketing. If you want to be taken seriously as an influencer, your Instagram account can’t be a hobby, it needs to be your focus.
Choose Your Niche – there’s a saying: “the riches are in the niches”, and that’s certainly true on Instagram. Choose a niche you are passionate about and can share daily. Find a new way to talk about that niche.
Set Aside Time for Shoots – you don’t want to upload a random picture each day, your uploads need to be well thought out and strategic. Plan your content calendar and go out on the weekends to take your photos for the next few weeks.
Quality, Quality, Quality – if you want to make a lot of money as an influencer, your images need to be something a brand is willing to pay you for. If the quality is bad, they won’t be interested in associating themselves with you. Fortunately, our smartphones have great quality cameras, so invest in lighting and educating yourself on how to take great photos.
Engage with Your Community – you can’t be an influencer without a loyal following, so focus everything you have here in the beginning. Reply to all comments and messages you get and support your community while it’s small. It’s important to remember that a brand won’t care about a large following if they aren’t engaged, but they may be willing to work with you if you have a small but very engaged following.
Collaborate with Others – start collaborating now; join forces with other influencers to share audiences and grow and even reach out to small brands once your following is strong.
Many of us dream of having the life of an Instagram influencer; working from home, being creative, and getting paid for enjoying all the things you already enjoy doing. However, very few of us actually set out to grow our Instagram following and build a business.
